The Merhavim Regional Council, established in 1951, is situated in the northwest of the Negev. The council’s population is 15,000 who live in 15 moshavim, a community village, an educational youth village, and the Hatzerim Air Force base. The council area is approximately 225 square miles, making it one of the largest regional councils in Israel. The landscape is open and lush, featuring low hills, streams, and abundant vegetation.

In recent years, the settlements in the area have been targeted by rocket and missile attacks from the Gaza Strip. The events of October 7th have continued to have a profound impact on the region’s residents. These projects are being developed to address the needs of the community for their health and well-being.

Despite the challenging reality, the area continues to develop and attract a new, young population. We are now promoting additional plans to improve community services and the services provided to residents to accommodate the expected doubling of the current population — a goal that the regional decision-makers are confident can be achieved.
The Needs
After the events of October 7th, and due to the ongoing security situation, many residents of the Merhavim Regional Council, suffer from high levels of anxiety, mental health issues, stress, and fear. To address these challenges, the council has worked hard to mobilize resources to establish a Resilience Center. In addition to the services provided at the Resilience Center, the council has identified additional needs for the project.
Specific projects the region is looking to fund include:

Health Center in Merhavim

  • Construction of a health and leisure center which will include several pools, a sauna, a gym, and necessary equipment.
  • For leisure and rehabilitation needs for area residents in the Western Negev (Gaza envelope).
  • Total Cost: $5.6 Million
Clubhouses for Senior Residents in Merhavim

The goal is to increase the “attractiveness” of these clubhouses so more of the senior population impacted by recent traumatic events in the region will use them and gain therapeutic support.

    • There is a need for resources, equipment, and the ability to promote related activities, thereby improving the quality of life for the senior population in the Western Negev.
    • Approximately, 1,500 seniors will be served within the impacted area.
Cost: $150,000

Equipment for Merhavim Youth Clubs

To provide essential equipment and resources, and increase attractiveness, of the youth clubs in the Western Negev settlements.

  • The importance of these clubs is to create safe spaces and respite for youths and young adults.
  • Cost: $300,000

To achieve our goals and maintain our vision of the Negev as an escape from the tumult and congestion of urban centers, we need your partnership and financial support.
