Greenhouses of the Future

Greenhouses of the future are a vital part of the region’s effort to develop sustainable desert agriculture. These advanced greenhouse systems are being developed and tested at The Yoel DeMalach Center for Desert Agriculture and other innovation hubs in the Negev.

Global Drivers of Innovation

Climate-resilient
greenhouses are designed to thrive in arid, high-temperature environments with minimal water resources.

Innovative Technologies:

    • Passive cooling systems (e.g., thermal screens, evaporative cooling)
    • Solar-powered automation
    • Hydroponics and vertical farming systems
  •
Water Efficiency
    • Use of drip irrigation, fogging systems, and desalinated or treated wastewater
    • Development of closed-loop irrigation and water reuse within greenhouses
Smart Agriculture
    • IoT sensors monitor humidity, temperature, CO₂ levels, and soil/water conditions in real time
    • AI-driven control systems optimize growth conditions and reduce energy/water waste
Major Projects and Institutions

The Yoel DeMalach Center for Desert Agriculture

    • Testing future-ready greenhouse systems in extreme desert conditions
    • Collaborative trials with global tech companies and academic institutions

Ben-Gurion University – The Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research

    • Focuses on water-saving technologies and climate-smart crop research

Netafim (Israel)

    • Develops precision irrigation systems used globally and in Negev-based greenhouses

Volcani Center (ARO)

    • Provides scientific support for future greenhouse crop development in harsh climates
Key Goals
    • Produce high-yield crops with minimal environmental impact
    • Transform desert land into productive farmland
    • Serve as a model for other arid regions worldwide

The Yoel DeMalach Center for Desert Agriculture collaborates with local farms, universities, and global partners. Funding is urgently needed to continue this important work.
